Giving Q & A
The ISF Academy is a not-for-profit private independent school which does not receive any government funding for its operations. Our independence enables us to pursue our unique academic vision of a dual language immersion school for tomorrow’s global citizens with the necessary conviction. It gives us the freedom to select our curriculum, assessment methodology, teaching staff, medium of instruction and class size.
We are proud that one of our hallmarks is the high level of volunteerism and commitment exhibited by members of our community including board members, parents as well as teachers and staff who regularly go beyond what is required of them. Going forward, the school needs to significantly expand its donor pool from its 16-member Board of Governors who have given so very generously in the past, both in terms of time and financial capital, to realize our vision to build a model education for their children and for the future of Hong Kong.
We appeal to all of you to ensure that this spirit of volunteerism and giving continues for the ongoing benefit of the students at The ISF Academy.
Why do we need to raise funds?
In our short history, we have managed to build an excellent reputation for the school. Maintaining this reputation is vital. Doing so means investing in talented teachers, modern facilities, excellent academic programs and student development programs. The expansion of our facilities, curriculum, teachers and scholarships and the need to provide our students with the best possible resources is a constant challenge we face. We have only completed Phase I and II of our plan for the School. We now need to implement Phase III.
I am already paying such high school fees, why do I still need to give more?
Even though school fees are carefully managed and directed to fund teaching and general running of the school, they only cover a portion of operating costs. We have to rely on donations to cover the shortfall. To remain at the forefront of education and remain a centre of excellence, we need additional funds and implement Phase III. This is crucial to maintain our position as one of the best Putonghua-English language immersion schools in the world.
Don’t tuition fees cover all of these costs?
Tuition fees do not cover the actual cost of educating a child at The ISF Academy. The financial model that underpins our school’s operation depends on three principal sources of revenue: endowment income, tuition fees and donations from parents, friends and corporations. Raising funds is a vital component of that financial equation. This financial model is used by all the best private schools in the world which have a large endowment and a culture of giving.
Does the school receive any subsidies from the Government?
The school does not receive any subsidy from the government for its operations. An initial grant was given to the school for the construction of the campus but the government will not fund the construction of further facilities. This is different from local schools and Direct Subsidy Schools (DSS) in Hong Kong who do receive subsidies from the government.
Will my gift make a difference?
Absolutely. Every donation of any size makes a difference to our school. No donation is too small. With your gift, you are making a real impact on the lives of our children, our students today and our leaders for tomorrow. . Donating also sends a powerful message that you believe in our school and that the school has made a difference in the lives of your children and yourself.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes. The Independent Schools Foundation Limited is a non-profit education establishment approved by the Inland Revenue Department under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance and all donations of HK$100 and above are eligible for tax deductible in Hong Kong.
Our donors and volunteers have supported the school because they share our passion for achieving its mission and vision. We hope that you do too.
