This year’s first movie sharing by the CCC Reading Club • Movie Club – “So Long, My Son” was successfully held on November 8.  The event has drawn enthusiastic support and active participation from parents and community members.

The screening was held at Yidan Chinese Cultural Centre from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The host, Secondary teacher Mr. Miao Xiaolong, led the audience in passionate discussion and exploration on themes such as “the development of the times”, “ordinary people” and “good and evil”. Mr. Miao also introduced the audiovisual languages applied in the movie including “narrative space”, “montage” and “shot composition”.

Dr. Malcolm Pritchard, Head of School; Ms. Shan Ning, Primary Principal, and Dr. Bill Mak, Director of Chinese Research Center, were also present in support of the event. They commended the efforts of the Reading Club • Movie Club in promulgating Chinese culture on campus and in nurturing a Chinese learning and exploration environment in the ISF community.

Post-event comments from parents:

Times are changing, but “living with kindness and resilience” is a timeless spirit transcending different eras. This is how the movie has inspired me about the reality.

Today’s sharing was marvelous…I gained knowledge in film narrative and techniques in speaking with the lens. I have richly benefited from the event and relish for more.

Most importantly, the session has extended beyond its scope to pay respect to the subculture of each family, and allowed us to further discuss these topics with our children. This should be the highlight of the event as it is a part of the cultural legacy!
