That unofficial standard, called Gu\u0101nhu\u00e0 \u5b98 \u8a71 (\u201cMandarin\u201d), was spoken by officials, soldiers, merchants, and any others who interacted along important commercial routes, such as canals and ports, and in cities and towns throughout the vast Chinese empire. He has done fieldwork mapping dialects in Jiangsu and Zhejiang.
