How to get a New Zealand Visa

1. Check whether you are eligible

To qualify for a fee paying student visa, you’ll need:

  • to be accepted for a course at an education institute approved by the Ministry of Education or the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)
  • money for your tuition fees or proof that you have a scholarship that pays your fees
  • proof you have enough money to live on while you’re in NZ, and
  • a ticket out of NZ or evidence that you have enough money to buy one

2. Health requirements for a student visa

You must have a chest x-ray if you are applying for a student visa and staying for 6 months or more and you:

  • are from a country that does not have a low incidence of TB (Hong Kong is not on the list), or
  • have spent more than 3 months in the last 5 years in a country that does not have a low incidence of TB (Hong Kong is not on the list)

If you are applying for a Fee Paying Student Visa, you do not need to have a medical examination, no matter how long you are staying in New Zealand, unless:

  • you have used intravenous drugs
  • you have had a blood transfusion
  • you have participated in or been exposed to any activity which may have exposed you to a serious infectious disease, such as HIV, or Hepatitis B or C
  • You have been requested

3. Provide genuine reason

When you apply for a temporary visa or permission to enter New Zealand, you must provide genuine reasons for coming to New Zealand on the visa you apply for, and that while you are here you will obey the law.

You must show that you:

  • only intend to stay in New Zealand temporarily
  • are coming to New Zealand for a lawful purpose: The primary lawful purpose of a student visa is to undertake study
  • will comply with the conditions of your visa after you arrive
  • will not stay in New Zealand without a valid visa, and
  • are able to leave New Zealand at the end of your stay

To assess your intentions the following information will be considered:

  • the information you provide on your visa application or your arrival card
  • the documents you provide to support your visa application
  • any information we have about your personal circumstances
  • any information we have about your previous applications.

To assess information about your personal circumstances, the following information will be considered:

  • any family ties you may have in your home country or in New Zealand
  • any personal, financial, work or other commitments you may have in your home country or New Zealand
  • any circumstances that mean you may not want to return to your home country.

4. Good character

Applicants for all visas must be able to show they are of good character. When you apply you must provide issues or activities in your past that may affect how your character will be assessed when your visa application is processed.

You must declare if you have been involved in criminal or racist activities, or have provided false or misleading information in the past.

Information about your character will be considered when assessing your application. When you apply, provide:

  • a full explanation of any character issues, and
  • evidence supporting your case.

Depending on your circumstances, the good character requirements may be waived. In order to make a fair decision, things such as the followings will be taken into account:

  • what the nature of the issue is — for example, if you provided false information accidentally or on purpose
  • how long ago the issue occurred
  • the circumstances surrounding the offence or incident
  • your personal circumstances, including your ties to New Zealand and why you are applying for a residence visa.

You will be contacted if more information is required.

5. Police certificates

You must provide police certificates if you are:

  • 17 years or older
  • planning to stay for more than 24 months — this includes any time you have already spent in New Zealand

Provide police certificates from any country you:

  • are a citizen of
  • have lived in for more than 5 years since you turned 17

You do not need to provide police certificates if you:

  • provided them in a previous visa application, and they were issued in the previous 3 years, or
  • are under 20 years of age and have held a student visa (or consecutive student visas) on and since the date you turned 17, and are applying for a further student visa.

6. Evidence of fund

When assessing your application, it must:

  • be verified that the evidence you provide about your funds is genuine
  • be confident that these funds will be available to you while you are in New Zealand
