How to Get an Australia Visa

1. Organise health exams

Applicants may need health examinations. Online visa applicants can check whether they need to have health examinations in their application status section. Applicants who submit paper-based applications will be contacted by a case officer if health examinations are needed. You will be given:

  • a list of the examinations you must have
  • an identifier we call a HAP ID

You will need the HAP ID to make an appointment for your health examinations.

The Australian government considers Hong Kong as a place with a high risk of tuberculosis. Applicants therefore will likely need to submit the results of medical examination and chest x-ray as part of their visa application.

You must be examined by one of the Department’s approved panel physicians or clinics. Contact a panel physician by finding the immigration office nearest to you.

2. Prepare evidence you need

You will need to give us a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for each course. The last course you take as part of the course package is your main course of study. Your main course of study will be used to work out what financial and English language skills evidence you must provide.

If your visa application includes a package of courses, course gaps must be less than two calendar months, unless the first course finishes at the end of the standard academic year and the next course commences at the beginning of the standard academic year.

To see what you will need to provide evidence of, use the Document Checklist Tool.

Enter your country of passport and education provider to get an accurate document checklist. Choose the option ‘I have not decided on a provider yet’ in the tool if you have not yet chosen a provider. The tool will tell you what you will need to provide evidence of.

Re-check the document checklist based on the country of passport and education provider just before you submit your application to be sure you have the most current list.

3. Applying from Hong Kong

Apply for your visa at least 8 weeks before your course starts. The processing time can vary and can range from a month to half a year or even longer. Your application can take longer to process if:

  • you do not fill it in correctly
  • you do not include all the documents needed or more information is needed

The application will be processed once you have paid the correct application charge. You will be notified if you have not paid the correct charge.

4. After applying

The applicant may need to provide further information such as biometrics:

Most applicants will be advised immediately after applying if they need to provide biometrics. You will receive a letter and will also be able to see this request in your ImmiAccount. You will be given 14 days to provide biometrics so it is important to arrange an appointment quickly using the instructions in the request letter.

You must provide biometrics before traveling to Australia.

5. Visa outcome

The visa outcome of your application will be provided in writing. You will be told:

  • your visa grant number
  • the date your visa expires
  • your visa conditions

Keep a copy of the decision with you when in Australia.

Refusal of application will also be given in writing. Reason and whether you have the right to a review of the decision will be provided. There will be no refund for the application charge if the application has been refused.
