ISF Celebrates City Nature Challenge 2022 Results
April 29 – May 2, 2022
From April 29 to May 2, the ISF community joined the annual City Nature Challenge along with 447 cities which resulted in nearly 1.7 million observations in urban environments worldwide. Hong Kong came third in the world with over 33,000 observations and 27% of them are contributed by ISF! Please visit here for the impressive results achieved by the ISF teams.
Under the guidance of Shuyuan faculty, the Academy and Pre-School students took part in the challenge representing their Houses, Virtues and grades. Capturing pictures of wild plants and animals locally, the ISF community documented a total of 1,430 species in just four days. Impressively, 413 of our observations were verified in a data quality assessment and achieved Research Grade status, which means that the observations can be found on Google Scholar and are recommended for use by scientists in their studies, contributing to the world of scholarly research.
Through participating in this challenge, students practiced the virtues of Ren and Ai, demonstrating compassion and care for the natural world by being kind to all creatures and protecting the environment, as well as showing a love of learning and intellectual curiosity that goes beyond the classroom. Reflecting on her experience, one of our Grade 9 students said, “I’ve grown an appreciation for my surroundings and learned to look more carefully at the different plants and animals in my neighborhood, noticing things I previously didn’t know were there.” The project also motivated her to go outside on long walks and interact with friends and family.
Congratulations to Secondary Earth House, Primary Yi and Pre-School Year 2 (Extended Program) on topping the results for each division (cataloguing 3,743, 220, and 209 observations respectively). Secondary Metal House ranked top among the ISF teams with 685 species recorded. Well done to all students for their remarkable discoveries!
Shuyuan and student volunteers have just begun planning for next year’s challenge and we look forward to breaking more records in April 2023. Join us in discovering more of the biodiversity of our planet!
