Sharing of the Life and Poetic Works of Su Shi

 

Prof. Chen Zhi, President of Hong Kong Chu Hai College and Director of Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology, Hong Kong Baptist University shared the life and poetic works of Su Shi with over 200 teachers, students and parents of the ISF Academy. He recounted Su Shi’s early success as a “Jinshi” (scholar) and his later life filled with political rejection and banishment. Despite the hardships he faced, Su Shi maintained an optimistic spirit, which he poured into his numerous poetic masterpieces, such as At Red Cliff, Cherishing the Past.

Prof. Chen also introduced the legendary figure of “Su Xiaomei” and shared various legends about her wits and talents. His explanation of ancient Chinese honorific titles spurred lively discussion and interaction from the student audience.

About the Speaker :

Professor Chen is an internationally renowned scholar and researcher in Chinese Studies. His diversified interests in Chinese Studies include classical studies and early Chinese culture and history, historical writings, traditional Chinese poetry, excavated documents and paleography: bronze inscriptions, bamboo and silk writings, and intellectual history of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In addition to his remarkable scholarship, he is also an experienced university administrator. Apart from being the Head of Department of Chinese at HKBU, he was Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Director of Mr. Simon Suen and Mrs. Mary Suen Sino-Human Institute. He was appointed Founding Acting Director of Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology and became the Director since 2014.
